All students deserve the opportunity to grow into healthy, independent, and engaged citizens.  Individually and collaboratively we all have the responsibility to ensure that opportunity prevails.

School is Important

At school, students are gearing up to become the adult citizens of tomorrow.  School teaches us about the world around us and prepares us with the tools we will need for personal and workforce success.  It is a mix of educational and social encounters that provide the basic skills we use on a daily basis.

Teachers are the Most Important

Picture
In schools, teachers are the most important factor contributing to a student's achievement; more important than curricula, class size, facilities, and funding.   The reality is that teachers are the biggest influence on a person's life, behind only parents and friends.

Student-Teacher Relationship is Critical

Picture
The old saying “students don’t care what you know until they know that you care” is both catchy and true. You cannot teach someone that you do not know or truly understand.  The student-teacher relationship is critical and directly linked to higher academic performance and better overall outcomes inside and outside of the school.  This relationship is also paramount in creating an environment where students can overcome an adverse or traumatic event. Focusing on these relationships through social-emotional learning leads to students that are more engaged, make smarter decisions, and take on challenges.

Our Comprehensive Solution is a Social and Emotional Learning Solution

According to the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

The use of our assessment increases the ability of students to accurately recognize one's own emotions, thoughts, values, and how they influence behavior (Self-Awareness).  The ability to successfully regulate one's emotions thoughts and behaviors is possible through the deep awareness of themselves, discovered in the assessment, and the practical application and self reflection made available through our curriculum in the classroom (Self-Management).  The application of the assessment school-wide promotes common language and understanding of each other (Social-Awareness).  This social-awareness is supported through group activities in the classroom (Relationship Skills).   The combination of increased self and social awareness, individual reflection and group activities in the classroom,  and skills based curriculum leads to better decision making (Responsible Decision Making).

The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise -- with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country.
